From the recording Martha's Song

I wrote this song about my mother at a time when her loss was feeling especially poignant to me.

Lyrics

I can’t believe you’re gone seems like I saw you yesterday. I ran out of time with so much left to say
I can’t believe it’s true—can’t believe that it’s real but I know it must be so because of this sadness I feel

Why did I wait so long?
I know that I was wrong
I love, you—now you’re gone
I took it for granted that you’d always be there—that I’d always have your life to share

You showed me how to love and taught me how to live and that words of kindness are the ones to give
I know someday—we’ll be together again, I don’t know how long, so until then

I’ll try to live by God’s will—that you helped me to find
And follow the light—that through your life shined
Live by your examples—make them all mine
And give them all to our family, these gifts that you gave to me

You showed me how to love and taught me how to live and that words of kindness are the ones to give
I know someday—we’ll be together again, I don’t know how long, so until then

I’ll try to live by God’s will—that you helped me to find
And follow the light—that through your life shined
Live by your examples—make them all mine
And give them all to our family, these gifts that you gave to me
